AURORA | An unidentified man was treated for smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire broke out in his central Aurora apartment Tuesday, drawing a crowd of rescuers and firefighters, according to Aurora Fire Rescue officials.

Several residents of the Preserve and City Center apartment complex, 1076 S. Elkhart Way, called to report the fire at 1;21 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from the top floor of the two-story apartment building.

Firefighters quickly ran hoses into the apartment to put out the blaze.

An apartment resident told rescuers that a child was trapped inside the burning apartment, Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst said in a statement.

Firefighters used a ladder truck to get into the apartment, but found no one inside, officials said.  Soon after, the child was found safe outside the apartment, Hurst said.

The fire was considered extinguished 10 minutes after the first fire truck arrived, among 18 units and 40 personnel deployed to the blaze.

One man taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation is expected to be OK, officials said. Two adults and a child were forced from their home because of the kitchen fire, which officials say was caused by “unattended cooking.”
