AURORA | A man was shot to death while driving Thursday night when a gun held by a passenger in his car went off, according to Aurora police.
The 21-year-old died at the scene, and police said he would be identified once the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office notifies his family and performs an autopsy. The 47-year-old passenger, who was also injured, was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound and was in police custody at the hospital as of Friday morning.
It was unclear whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. Police said charges in the case have not been filed pending further investigation.
Officers responded at 10:49 p.m. to a report of a crash involving a gray Toyota Camry around the Heather Gardens neighborhood, in the 13600 block of East Bates Avenue. When they arrived, they found the two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police spokesman Joe Moylan asked that anyone with information about the shooting contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
