AURORA | Police are investigating a high-speed crash that left a passenger dead and the driver hospitalized Friday night.
In a statement Saturday morning, police said the crash happened about 11:15 p.m. on Interstate 225 between the East Sixth Avenue and East Alameda Avenue exits.
A gray 2008 Honda Civic with two people inside was northbound on the highway at a “high rate of speed,” police said, when the driver lost control and the car drifted into the center median. The vehicle rolled several times.
When emergency crews arrived, the pair in the car were stuck inside the vehicle and had to be extracted by rescuers, police said.
The driver and passenger were both rushed to a local hospital, police said. The driver had minor injuries, police said, and the passenger later died.
Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash and it is unclear what charges the driver could face.
Names of the two people involved have not been released.
“Speed is causal factor in nearly half of the crashes in the city of Aurora,” police said in a statement. “Adhering to the speed limits greatly reduces the risk of being involved in a crash.”
