AURORA | An Aurora police officer shot an armed robbery suspect after a foot chase through a north aurora neighborhood early Sunday, police said.
The wounded suspect is expected to survive and the officer was not injured, police said.
The incident started around 12:30 a.m. when police say an armed man robbed a Bradley gas station at 1090 Havana St.
A short time later a patrol officer spotted a man who matched the suspect’s description a few blocks away at East 7th Avenue and Ironton Street. When the officer tried to contact the man, he fled and the officer chased him on foot through several yards.
At some point in the chase, witnesses heard the officer give the man commands, then heard gunshots.
The suspect was rushed to an area hospital where police said he is expected to survive.
Investigators recovered a gun at the scene, police said.
The officer who shot the man has been placed on leave as per department policy regarding officers who fire their weapons on duty.
The incident was the second officer-involved shooting for Aurora police this weekend. Early Saturday morning, police shot an armed man after he shot at them during a standoff at a townhome. Police said that inside the townhome, they found three people who the man had killed.
