AURORA | Police Chief Dan Oates has taken the job as the top cop in Miami Beach, Florida, and will take the helm there in June.
Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine confirmed on his Twitter feed that the town council had chosen Oates on Wednesday afternoon.
Oates has been the chief in Aurora since 2005.
City officials have said they plan to launch a national search for his replacement, something expected to take about nine months.
Oates’ move to Miami Beach was first reported last week and the town council formally appointed him Wednesday.

I can’t hardly wait for him to leave.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Good riddance.
If Oates reserves the right to hire an upper chain of command from outside the new department, I think it will probably be the recently retired Div. Chief Roger Cloyd.

Wonder if he’s planning on enticing other APD officers to follow him down to Miami Beach?
