AURORA | Police Chief Dan Oates has taken the job as the top cop in Miami Beach, Florida, and will take the helm there in June.

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine confirmed on his Twitter feed that the town council had chosen Oates on Wednesday afternoon.

Oates has been the chief in Aurora since 2005.

City officials have said they plan to launch a national search for his replacement, something expected to take about nine months.

Oates’ move to Miami Beach was first reported last week and the town council formally appointed him Wednesday.
