AURORA | Mrachek Middle School was closed Monday when school staff found a pipe bomb near a trash can at the school shortly after the morning bell.

Nobody was injured in the incident and Aurora fire Capt. Wendy Lippman, a spokeswoman for the department, said the bomb failed to detonate.

Lippman said security camera footage shows the would-be bombers trying to set the device on fire Saturday evening in an alcove on the south side of the campus.

School staff found remnants of the blaze around 8:30 a.m. Monday and immediately called the fire department, she said. The fire caused minimal damage, she said.

Lippman said she couldn’t release a description of the suspect or how many there were, but she said investigators are reviewing the security footage.

“They have very good video of the suspects,” she said.

Students at the school were evacuated to the south fields at the school before being sent to nearby Rangeview High School.

Aurora Public Schools officials said on the district’s official twitter feed that parents can pick their kids up early at Rangeview with an ID. Students who ride the bus will be taken to their normal bus stop at 12:30 p.m. Parents who want their children to stay at school until normal dismissal time can call 720-229-9165 or 720-951-8248.

Officials from Aurora Public Schools say they are investigating the incident.
