AURORA | A 39-year-old man shot by Colorado parole officers earlier this month after police say he pulled a gun on them has been charged with felony assault, Adams County prosecutors announced Wednesday.
Michael Meeks was wounded in the abdomen in the June 8 shooting at the Monte Vista Apartment, police said. In a statement Wednesday, prosecutors said Meeks has been charged with two counts of first-degree assault on a peace officer and one count of possession of a weapon by a previous offender.
Aurora police said two parole officers from the Colorado Department of Corrections went to the apartment at 2014 Emporia St. to check on a parolee when Meeks — who wasn’t the person the parolee officers were checking on — pulled a gun on them. The officers opened fire and shot Meeks.
Meeks was rushed to an area hospital and later booked on June 11 into the Adams County Jail, where he remains without bond.
Meeks waived his right to formal advisement of charges Tuesday and is due back in court July 7, according to prosecutors.
According to state records, Meeks has been arrested several times in Colorado on burglary, theft and assault charges. At the time of the shooting, he was wanted in Denver on burglary charges.

The parolee pulls a gun on officers … he sure didn’t want to go back to prison, but he was still doing crime while out on parole. This guy gets the Darwin award.
