AURORA | A 37-year-old man has been charged with vehicular homicide and DUI after an Aurora crash Monday that killed an off-duty Littleton police officer, Aurora police said.

Jemal Abdelkader Dawed is also charged with careless driving and failure to yield in connection with the death of Kevin Denner, police said.

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. on East Belleview Avenue and South De Gaulle Street. Police said motorcyclist, later identified as Denner, was riding a Harley Davidson west on Belleview when a Toyota headed east on Belleview tried to turn on De Gaulle. The Toyota turned in front of the motorcycle and the bike slammed into the car’s passenger side. Denner died at the scene and the driver of the Toyota was uninjured.

Police said Dawed was riving the Toyota and caused the crash when he failed to yield the right-of-way to the motorcycle.

Denner was wearing a helmet, police said, but it was knocked from his head during the crash.

Dawed is being held in the Arapahoe County Jail and is due in court Wednesday morning, according to jail records.
