AURORA | A 34-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with a Halloween night slaying near a homeless encampment just west of Interstate 225.
Aurora police said Tuesday that Richard Alan Darling has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond in the Arapahoe County Jail.
The Arapahoe County coroner’s office has not yet released the name of the person killed.
According to police, officers responded about 10:35 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, to a field along the Toll Gate Creek between Potomac Street and Interstate 225. Upon arrival, officers found multiple homeless people in the field and one dead adult.
Darling was taken into custody that day on an unrelated warrant and police called him “a person of interest” in the slaying. Later, police said Darling had been charged with murder.
According to state records, Darling has been arrested just once before in Colorado. That arrest came in February when Denver police arrested him on a charge of disturbing the police. The unrelated warrant Darling was arrested on stemmed from him failing to appear in court on a concealed weapons charge, according to state records.
Aurora police are asking anyone who may have any information regarding the homicide to call Detective Chad Lampson at 303-739-6013.
