AURORA | Arrowhead Elementary School in Aurora was placed on a “brief” lockdown Friday morning after school officials were alerted to a student having a loaded firearm in a backpack, according to Cherry Creek schools officials.

“All students and staff are safe,” school officials said in a message to students at about 9:30 a.m. “District security and law enforcement continue to be on scene investigating the situation.”

“The preliminary information has so far determined the student was showing the firearm to friends, when another student notified a teacher,” Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said in a statement. “The teacher secured the firearm and the child’s backpack, and the school went into its lockdown protocol out of an abundance of caution.”

Details about the student were not released.

“There was not a live round in the chamber, but the firearm was loaded,” Moylan said. “There is no indication at this time the student had any intention of causing any harm to students or faculty.”

The school has since returned to normal operations, officials said.

Investigators are working to determine how the student got the gun. Police said they do no anticipate pursuing charges against the child.

  1. APD and DA: Please indict the adult who left their gun unsecured. They need to do some time in jail. No excuses. No deals. Jail.
