DENVER | Flanked by victims of the Aurora theater shooting and their families, two Aurora lawmakers called for tougher gun restrictions Friday in the wake of the Aurora shooting and another at a Connecticut elementary school.

In a press conference at the state Capitol, Rep. Rhonda Fields and Sen. Morgan Carroll, both Democrats from Aurora, said the recent rash of mass shootings show current gun laws aren’t enough.

“It’s too easy for criminals to get access to dangerous weapons. We need to do something about that,” said Fields, whose son and his fiancee were gunned down in 2005.

The lawmakers didn’t offer specific plans Friday, but said they want to look at strengthening background checks so the mentally ill and criminals have a harder time getting guns.

Dave Hoover, whose nephew, AJ Boik, was one of 12 people killed in the July 20 shooting rampage at the Century Aurora 16 theater, said “weapons of war” like the AR-15 assault rifle that the theater shooter used should not be easy for a criminal to possess.

“We are not controlling how they get into the hands of dangerous individuals,” he said.

The press conference came minutes after the NRA made its first public comments since last week’s shootings in Newtown, Conn. that left 26 people, including 20 first graders, dead. Officials from the gun advocacy group said gun control measures weren’t the answer to the recent shootings. Instead, they called for more armed “good guys” to combat shooters.

At the Denver press conference, the lawmakers and victims families said more guns isn’t the answer to gun crime.

“Simply adding more guns is not going to solve this problem,” Carroll said.

  1. Any law maker who pushes for the end of our rights should be arrested for treason.

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be
    infringed.”

      1. “A well regulated” was in use before the constitution was written in 1789. In meant to be in proper working order and well conditioned. Being well conditioned means having the best parts available and in working order. That means when the rest of the world has ak-47’s, citizens of the US by rights will not be denied equal and better weapons.

  2. GUNS ARE not THE PRIMARY ISSUE – Try focusing on the mentally deranged, excuse me – politically correct term: Handicapped individuals!
Due to a mentally handicapped individual sponsored by the Aurora Mental Health Association I had an Apartment building started on fire – killing two innocent people, seriously injuring 5 more and causing major damage to a building which is no longer capable of housing anyone. The AMHO takes NO responsibility – I’m left with a 23 unit building and all the Tenants having to find new housing accomodations. GUNS were not the problem – It was a copy cat reaction to the HOLMES case. FOCUS on better handling of mentally handicapped people – they know who they are – now lets find out how to better treat them, and I don’t mean just provide more $$$$ – If they need help/direction be responsible and treat them. POLITICIANS: STOP making an issue out of guns and focus on the Menatlly Handicapped and their treatment – that will go a long way to SOLVING the problem

  3. And i would like to know exactly what you would want done and what sort of violence that would stop….what i don’t want to hear is some vauge wording like “we need to do something”…specifics…or shut up.
