AURORA | An Adams County jury last week convicted an 18-year-old man of reckless manslaughter for the 2015 slaying of a 14-year-old boy outside a north Aurora apartment complex.
James Jason Tobias Lee had been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Sept. 2, 2015, death of Marcell Jay Johnson.
But after a five-day jury trial, a jury convicted Lee of the lesser charge of reckless manslaughter.
In addition, Lee was convicted of two counts of reckless manslaughter and one count of misdemeanor assault.
According to Adams County prosecutors, Lee shot and killed Johnson outside the Fitzsimons Apartments at 1568 Nome St. A 17-year-old boy also was shot in the arm but survived, prosecutors said.
Lee was arrested shortly after the slaying and has been held in the Adams County Jail since.
Lee is scheduled for sentencing July 5. The reckless manslaughter charge typically carries a sentence of between two and six years in prison, and Lee could face additional prison time for the other charges. Had he been convicted of first-degree murder, Lee would have faced a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
