AURORA | The man who is accused of bloodying a CBZ Management property manager after assaulting him at a northwest Aurora apartment had his arraignment hearing postponed until December.

On Nov. 14, 2023, the property manager of the Whispering Pines Condominiums at 1357 Helena St., Zev Baumgarten, was allegedly assaulted by Yoendry Vilchez Medina-Jose, who also reportedly threatened the life of another resident at the apartment complex the same day.

The CBZ Management X account appears to refer to the alleged incident on their thread about the Tren de Aragua gang “taking over” their apartment complexes in Aurora.

Aurora police and city officials have repeatedly disputed allegations by property owners and city Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky that Venezuelan gangs had overrun the properties or the area. City officials say problems at Whispering Pines and two other properties in northwest Aurora owned by CBZ are caused primarily by mismanagement, not Venezuelan immigrants nor gangs. Mayor Mike Coffman has on multiple occasions referred to CBZ as “slumlords.”

CBZ officials and their city council supporters stand behind claims of their complexes being overrun by gangs.

“After some time, we noticed a rise in crime and tenant complaints. The most alarming moment occurred when our local CBZ representative was attacked at the end of 2023,” CBZ Management said on an X account opened in September, which focuses on controversial apartment problems at three properties in northwest Aurora. “He had gone to inspect a recently vacated three-bedroom apartment (a rare occurrence for such a large unit) only to find a group of men already inside. When he refused their $500 bribe to overlook the situation, they brutally attacked him. This photo was taken shortly after he escaped, just before being admitted to the hospital.”

The photo attached to the post depicts a man with a beard and glasses with blood on his mouth, face and clothing.

In a letter written by law firm Perkins Coie — representing the interests of CBZ — sent to the Aurora Police Department, said, “Nov. 2023, a consultant for the property management company was so severely beaten and stomped by gang members that he had to go to the hospital. Notably, this incident was captured on videotape, which we understand was provided to the Aurora Police Department.”

An arrest affidavit filed with the 18th Judicial District Court incident is currently suppressed, but the complaint listed Medina-Jose’s charges. On Aug. 5, Medina-Jose was arrested by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant out of Arapahoe District Court. Medina-Jose was charged with felony menacing for threatening another resident at the Whispering Pines. He was also charged with third-degree assault on the property manager.

Aurora Police officials announced on Sept. 11 that they identified Medina-Jose as a member of the gang Tren de Aragua.

At the request of Medina-Jose’s attorney, the arraignment hearing was postponed for Dec. 6. He remains in custody at the Arapahoe County jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.

  1. Evidently, the assault by one bonehead, while idiotic and inhumane, provided CBZ with the excuse they needed to take the heat off of them for the terrible conditions they allowed. Jurinski was the useful idiot to CBZ by amplifying their lie. Maybe she want to be Marjory Taylor Greene West or another Lauren Bobert, but all she did was cause us to question everything she says! Obviously, integrity isn’t as important to her as a microphone! She’ll be forgotten easily someday as soon as she fades from view. She should, she’s a joke!

    1. The fact that the “one bonehead” is identified as a Venezualen gang member then means nothing to you? Two things can be true at once. CBZ could be slum lords, and, at the same time, the apartment complexes could have been taken over by Venezualen gangs. One does not excuse the other. Your post suggests that your political leanings mean far more to you than finding out what is actually going on.

      1. Why let facts get in the way of good ol’ xenophobia!

BTW, what native American language does the name “Huntsman” come from?

    2. I firmly agree with you based on what I’ve heard and seen so far. I have to ask though, why a postponement? Sometimes the justice system seems antiquated to say the least.
