AURORA | An 18-year-old man was fatally shot by Aurora police early Sunday after officers responded to a call of an armed man holding a person hostage at an apartment complex in west-central Aurora.
Residents at an apartment in the 1900 block of South Vaughn Way called dispatchers at about 11:15 p.m. Sunday for help during a dispute, saying one of the apartment residents had a gun.
“The caller told dispatchers a man assaulted a woman, threatened them and another roommate with the firearm, and returned inside an apartment with the victim,” police spokesperson Agent Matt Longshore said in a statement.
Aurora police dispatched several officers to the scene, including a member of the department’s hostage negotiation team.
Police were able to persuade the gunmane to release the unidentified woman “without further injury,” Longshore said.
“Officers remained at the scene and attempted to contact the suspect to negotiate his surrender,” according to a police statement. “About 1 a.m. Sunday, the suspect appeared in a doorway and fired multiple shots at officers. One officer returned fire, striking the suspect.”
The man was treated by police and rescuers at the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to gunshot injuries. He will be identified by county coroner officials at a later date.
“The involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with agency policy,” police said. “The 18th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting. “
Aurora police are conducting a separate investigation.

Drugs? Drunk? Suicide by cop?
Thank you, APD officers, for getting the woman out of harm’s way.
Sorry that you had to shoot him to stop him from harming others.
Glad that his shots did not hit anyone. Where did they hit?
