AURORA | Aurora Public Schools is set to hold its 16th Annual Back to School Kickoff, a community celebration that brings together the city’s diverse cultures to mark the beginning of the new school year — and get free stuff.

The event, slated for 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.Aug. 3, at the Town Center at Aurora mall.

School officials say the kickoff event is a mix of community engagement and celebration, throughout the shopping center.

APS students and their families will have the opportunity to meet their school principals and collect one of the 6,000 free backpacks filled with school supplies, provided exclusively for APS students.

A festival featuring free food and entertainment is scheduled for outside the mall. The festival includes bounce houses, a climbing wall, and dance and cheer-leading performances from APS high schools. Also scheduled are players from the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche, offering interactive basketball and hockey activities.

City officials are offering the public a look at an Aurora Public Library Bookmobile, and offering resources and free face painting for children.

A resource fair featuring dozens of community partners will be a key part of the event. Among the many booths, Kelly Education, APS’ partner in providing substitute teachers, will be on-site. Adults interested in working with Kelly Education can apply during the event.
