A rabbit in Aurora injured by being shot with blow darts. CITY OF AURORA

AURORA | Aurora Animal Control officials say five rabbits have been shot with blow darts in the city, and officials are searching for the culprit.

“Just because an animal isn’t a traditional pet doesn’t mean we won’t look out for their well-being,” Animal Control Officer Lucas Barr said in a statement.

Since July 15, five rabbits were reported injured, and one died, all near the intersection of East Glasgow Place and South White Crow Way, in the Southlands area.

“Criminal charges of animal cruelty are possible,” Barr said. “If a suspect is found and convicted, they could be subject to fines and/or jail time.”

The fifth incident was reported Aug. 19 in the same area, according to city officials.

“These darts cause internal bleeding as well as infection that can cause severe pain before the animal will succumb to their injuries,” Barr said in a statement. “Deliberately harming an animal is something our agency takes seriously, and we will investigate it thoroughly.”

“Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora’s Animal Control Dispatch line at 303-326-8288, option 6,” the statement said. “If you are unable to speak to someone directly, please leave a detailed message. Do not contact Aurora Police about this matter.”

Also, contact Animal Control Dispatch if a similarly injured or dead rabbit is encountered.

Animal Control Dispatch is available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Callers can remain anonymous. Tips with photos, if applicable, and should be emailed to

  1. This is all over the news. Give me a break. This is not really news. Enough said except that some kid got a weapon and is testing it out. Quick, call PETA.

    1. Hope thathe kid is caught and heavily fined.
Slightly similar to blow darts, my friends and I would shoot each other with pea-shooters.
Get him a paintball gun. Great fun with worthy opponentshooting back.
Leave the rabbits for hawks, owls, fox and coyotes.
