AURORA | A fatal motorcycle crash closed southbound Interstate 225 for about three hours Friday, snarling the morning commute on one of Aurora’s busiest stretches of road.
The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. on I-225 between the East Mississippi Avenue and East Iliff Avenue exits.
Police said a motorcyclist was in the left lane behind a mini van when the van slowed for traffic. The motorcyclist tried to slow down, but lost control, sending the rider into the right lane where he was run over by a semi truck.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, the drivers of the semi truck and mini van were not injured.
The crash happened in a construction zone and vehicles between the Mississippi exit and the crash were trapped for more than an hour before construction crews removed barriers and let them pass using a stretch of road currently under constriction.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the road reopened shortly before 10 a.m.
Police have not released the names of the people involved and said the investigation is ongoing, though they don’t think alcohol or excessive speed was a factor.
