AURORA | Another motel on East Colfax Avenue in north Aurora is poised for destruction as the city continues its efforts to revitalize the area and pave the way for redevelopment.
Aurora City Council members, acting as Urban Renewal Authority commissioners, unanimously agreed at a meeting Jan. 7 to loan money for the demolition of an East Colfax Avenue motel.
Owners of the Bolleana Motel asked for a loan of up to $40,000 to help pay for the demolition of the vacant motel, which was built in 1948 at 12016 E. Colfax Ave.
The motel has been vacant since August 2011 according to city documents, and cannot be reopened as a motel because of zoning regulations.
The low-interest loan made by the city will funded from Aurora Urban Renewal Authority’s coffers.
Demolishing the property would help make the property “more attractive” for redevelopment, said Melissa Rogers, senior development project manager for Planning and Development Service.
Councilwoman Sally Mounier, whose ward includes the north Aurora area, said she’s pleased to see the demolition project move forward, especially since the property contains some asbestos.
“I think it would be a wonderful improvement,” she said. Once the demolition project is complete later this year, she expects the property to attract redevelopment.
