DENVER | Colorado is facing more than $6 million in penalties after missing another federal welfare deadline.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services put the state on notice that it failed to meet an employment participation requirement for the Colorado Works program in 2013. State lawmakers are worried the state may also miss the 2014 and 2015 requirements.

The Denver Post reports (https://tinyurl.com/zg4dmdf) that’s in addition to a $5 million penalty for missing a deadline in 2012.

Department of Human Services executive director Reggie Bicha says the state may challenge the latest penalty. Officials say 21 other states also missed their deadlines and no state has been forced to pay up.

  1. So what are these federal welfare deadlines? What is the reason they exist? Who made the deadline rules? If they are legitimate, why were the deadlines not met, is the head of the Colorado Works Program incompetent?
This sounds like the feds are trying to scare-up money. There could be much more detail in the article.
