Democratic state Sen. Morgan Carroll announced Tuesday that she plans to challenge Congressman Mike Coffman, R-Aurora, for his House seat in the 2016 election — setting up another marquee match-up in Denver's eastern suburbs.

AURORA | Colorado’s Democratic governor has endorsed the Democratic challenger in the state’s most competitive congressional race.

Democrat Morgan Carroll announced the backing of Gov. John Hickenlooper on Tuesday. Carroll is a state senator challenging three-term Republican Rep. Mike Coffman.

The district in Denver’s eastern suburbs has become hotly contested political turf. Redistricting after the 2010 Census made the seat more competitive for Democrats, though Coffman has held on through some close races in the redrawn 6th District.

Coffman announced earlier this year that he would seek a fourth term in the U.S. House instead of running for U.S. Senate.

Carroll has represented Aurora in the state Senate since 2009 and was president of the chamber in 2014, before the GOP took the majority.

  1. She would be a breath of fresh air after Coffman who complains and complains about the VA hospital-and he was the guy in a place to do something a long, long time ago-he chair of the Oversights and Investigations Committee on Veterans Affairs…..

      1. Don’t you find it even slightly annoying that Coffman has been informed as chair every step of the way and yet was silent until close to the election? He was in a position to watch the process carefully but did not. No, I suppose because he’s “conservative”…..but not with your money…..

        1. I am more than slightly annoyed with ALL politicians, they are all in it for the long haul, for themselves, for anything other than the American people. I believe the Dems are far worse, but the GOP is very bad also. I don’t believe you can oversee that large a organization whether or not you’re involved with ‘information’ about how everything was going, This was snafu from the beginning, it was government run, it was nearly certain it would be, this was just even more ludicrous than most.

          1. Sure they want to you to hate dems so coffman and his wife can operate unimpeded. He was/in in the government and supposed to oversee the project. Yet he let costs go crazy. But it’s their trick “Look over there”. The head of the very committee that could do something yet he did nothing.

Really, he signed on for a job he couldn’t manage and blames everyone else. Gets paid by the government (you and me), he’s in the government……maybe you haven’t but I always did the job I was paid to do. Only a republican in the government can complain “it wasn’t me, it was the government” and people believe it. That is sad.

By the way, he pays (actually you and I) 37 staffers over $800,000 a year! Plus benefits of course

    1. You did not get wiser with age. If you served in Army, and Marines, and retired from that, then served in all the positions Mike Coffman has in Colorado (all state offices except Governor) , then you can minimize his efforts. Reason Tom Tancredo held onto that seat for so long after Dan Schaffer died of cancer before taking office, because Denver downtown kept picking carpet baggers to come out to Aurora to try to unseat him. I served my 26 years in military, and know leadership which you obviously missed out on somewhere.
Mike has been representing constituents for long time in Colorado, and I date back to 1991 experience with him, Tom, Bob Beauprez, Governor Owens. And you don’t know how VA operates with all the decision made in Washington, while the ones here local take the heat. We have been working ever since 1991 (before Lowry and Fitzsimons closed) because we saw Pat Schroder was going to lose both of those under BRAC. 1994 and 1997. And Colorado delegation, Governor and all staff came aboard back then. Changing presidents and administrations did not help. All the whiners on Sentinel who worked for civilian companies have no idea of the federal functions in trying to get the sidewalk superintendents (with unions), politicians with staff, State leaders with staff, Congress (House and Senate) and President all aboard.
SO THERE IS ENOUGH BLAME TO GO AROUND FROM BOTTOM TO TOP, FOR MUSHROOMING COST, DESIGN, AND MOTHER NATURE IS NOT THAT EASY EITHER. 4 floors of parking garage underneath , became 2 layers, with water table at 20 feet, not 40 plus feet, meaning 2 parking garages added. plus 4 separate clinics added by the roadside bombs, spinal, women, brain, and PTS problems. And is free standing with own power backup, water and services, so patients will not have to be evacuated in crisis, as in civilian hospitals. Lot more there than other hospitals.

  2. One political party in Washington is threatening ANOTHER government shutdown? If that party doesn’t want to work here’s someone who’ll work day and night for CD 6.

      1. The Hyde Amendment prohibits any federal money to be used to fund abortions. It’s already a law, sir or madam.

        1. Law my ass. PP is an abortion clinic, even you know that, or I would hope you do. $500,000.00 yearly for mammograms, you buy that, I won’t

          1. I DO know that your anger clouds your ability to reason. I see no reason to engage you further. LWIY … last word is your’s

          2. Okay, with the sale of human baby parts being brought into the conversation, allow them to operate as a private enterprise and stop ripping off the public. I suppose you didn’t find those videos alarming at minimum, and gruesome and wrong at best.

  3. Blast for all to read. Decision now is in Washington – Congress- Fund it and get on with it. Changes at local level not possible, so quit whining, and stating how it should have been built. Too many good people who fought for this since 1991, kept current with changes, met for townhouse meetings, and visits from Washington VA, all those years, are now deceased. This grew in cost and design, because of change of presidents, with changes of officials at all levels between Washington and down to the workers at present VAMC. Outer buildings are up, with walls, power, and other facilities. Now it needs to be finished, and paid for, and get the veterans in there as patients, before they age and die, still waiting. At 86 in November, with my 26 years of military service, I did not serve with thoughts of this delay, and lack of leadership within the decision makers. Thank God they were not leading any unit I served in.
