AURORA | Mike Coffman is letting the world know a little about how he feels about Donald J. Trump, and it’s not flattering.
The Aurora congressman, facing a daily onslaught of Democratic attacks seeking to tie him to the controversial Republican presidential nominee, released a campaign video Thursday, Aug. 4, saying he would stand up to Trump if the New York billionaire were elected.
“People ask me, ‘What do you think about Trump?’” he says. “Honestly, I don’t care for him much — and I certainly don’t trust Hillary.”
“I’m a Marine – for me, country comes first. My duty is always to you,” Coffman said in the ad. “So if Donald Trump is the president, I’ll stand up to him. Plain and simple.”
Coffman then also notes he would hold Clinton accountable “every step of the way” if she wins the presidential race in November.
Coffman also released a Spanish-language version of the ad.
The campaign for state Sen. Morgan Carroll — Coffman’s Democratic challenger in the CD6 race this November — quickly issued a statement calling the video “desperate.”
“Mike Coffman is still voting for Donald Trump, who denigrates women, people with disabilities, immigrants and the military,” said Carroll campaign spokesman Drew Godinich. “If he wasn’t going to vote for this bully, he would have already said so. This desperate ad is defintion Washington and the height of political double-speak — and it proves that Mike Coffman doesn’t have the moral conviction to denounce Trump’s candidacy.”
