HIGHLANDS RANCH | Candidates in one of the nation’s most competitive congressional races are meeting in Highlands Ranch for a final debate.
The debate Tuesday between Republican Rep. Mike Coffman and Democrat Joe Miklosi is the last meeting between the two before voters head to the polls on Nov. 6.
Miklosi is trying to unseat Coffman after two terms in the U.S. House. Miklosi is helped by new district lines that give Democrats a better job of winning the seat, which is centered on Aurora.
Miklosi describes Coffman as too conservative for the district and frequently compares Coffman to conservative firebrand Rush Limbaugh.
Coffman says he’s a centrist Republican and not unwilling to work with Democrats. He says Miklosi has voted to raise taxes in Colorado and would do the same in Congress.
Miklosi supports gun control, stem cell research, higher taxes, and other issues in Denver for years. Moving to Aurora, living in apartment stating intentions to remain in Aurora regardless of election, is not a viable promise that I could support. Have known Mike Coffman for over 20 years, supported him in each office held where he worked for Colorado citizens, he has attracted opponent moving here same as Tom Tancredo did through the years. Media smeared Tom just as Mike has been, but owning home since 1963, and moving back to it in 1977 after military retirement, I know whose legislative issues supported me and my peers. Aurora had about 3,000 residents in 1963, now over 300 thouand, and I know did the heavy lifting for that growth.
I can tell you that on the local front, Mike Coffman has reached out to me on several occasions to have a better pulse on what is happening in Aurora. Rep Coffman lives in Aurora’s Ward V, has lived in Ward V for many years, and truly cares about what happens in our City. And I can tell you that his inquiries are not about generalities, they are very specific, because he understands the details, history and challenges of our City. I am proud to endorse Rep Coffman.
