AURORA | The Aurora City Council selected Mike Hyman to follow Charlie Richardson as city attorney following a nationwide search.
Hyman beat 21 other candidates for the job, according to a statement from the city. He has served as an Aurora assistant city attorney since 1986 and as the deputy city attorney since 2012. Last April, he took over as interim city attorney for Charlie Richardson.
Hyman has extensive experience is in municipal finance and land use law. He also has experience crafting laws that adhere to the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, or TABOR, a voter-approved constitutional amendment that restricts taxing and spending by lawmakers.
Longtime Aurora City Councilwoman Barb Cleland said Hyman’s knowledge of TABOR has helped the city carefully construct ballot measures for November that include asking residents for a tax extension to fund transportation projects, a tax increase for public safety operations, and special taxes for retail marijuana.
She said Hyman’s 28 years with the city will also benefit him.
“Charlie (Richardson) spent a long time mentoring Mike. and I think Mike will do a very good job,” she said.
The Aurora City Attorney’s Office has an annual budget of $8.1 million and 51 employees. The city attorney oversees the criminal and civil legal matters for Aurora.
The city council will vote to approve Hyman’s contract at city hall Sept. 22.
