AURORA | A plea by some Aurora residents to reopen the Pheasant Run pool sunk Oct. 15.

Instead, Aurora City Council members said at their council meeting they would possibly use the $1 million they would have spent on redeveloping two pools into spray grounds for something else. They’ll wait to make a decision by February. The idea to wait and make a decision later was approved 8 to 1 with Councilman Bob LeGare voting no.

The original council proposal was to redevelop the Pheasant Run and Village Green pools into spray grounds at a cost of about $1 million, as part of the 2013 budget. The council adopted the rest of the proposed budget unanimously.

Several residents spoke against the spray grounds, calling them “glorified sprinklers” and saying the neighborhood kids are too old for them but would benefit from a pool that offered swimming classes.

Those two pools were originally targeted for closure in 2009 and 2010 because of low attendance.

Council members surprised Aurora resident Ruth Fountain Monday evening when they announced they would name the future Trolley Trailer No. 610 enclosure at the Aurora History Museum after her.

The enclosure will be named the “Ruth Fountain Wing” of the history museum.

According to city documents ahead of the meeting, Fountain is a “stellar example of a community supporter and activist.”

Fountain is a former council member and has served on dozens of committees, commissions and boards in the city over more than four decades.

An emotional Fountain, flanked by friends who were in on the surprise, shouted “Thank you!” to the council members from crowd.
