AURORA | A man who police say caused a fatal crash as he sped away from a north Aurora shooting is due in court later this month.

George West, 29, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide following the July 28 crash that left Candace Stuart, 66, dead. West was later released from jail after the crash.

Aurora police spokesman Officer Frank Fania said investigators believe West was behind the wheel of a BMW that sped away from a shooting in the 1100 block of Clinton Street late that night.

Officers chased the car into Denver where it crashed near east 13th Avenue and Olive Street, police said.

A spokeswoman for the Arapahoe County district attorney’s office said formal charges against West have not been filed. He is due in court Aug. 28.

A woman was injured in the shooting, Fania said, but investigators don’t believe she was the intended target.

Two other men who were in the car with West were injured in the crash but have not been charged with a crime, Fania said.

The intended target in the shooting has not cooperated with investigators, Fania said, and police aren’t yet sure who the shooter was.

While the shooting and crash stretched across two jurisdictions, Fania said both incidents will be prosecuted in Arapahoe County.
