AURORA | All criminal charges have been dropped against a school bus driver who was accused of driving under the influence earlier this year.

18th Judicial District Attorney’s office spokeswoman Vikki Migoya announced the decision in a statement Friday, July 15, regarding Michael Hobbs, who was a bus driver for Cherry Creek School District.

Hobbs was reported by other district staff members for not responding properly to his radio, as well as a driver who suspected he was intoxicated while operating a bus with children on board.

After dropping about 30 students off at his first and only stop, he was stopped by Arapahoe County deputies. Hobbs said he had a beer at lunch one day in addition to being on cold medicine. He later failed a voluntary roadside maneuvers test, and a breathalyzer test showed he had a 0.015 blood-alcohol content. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and child abuse.

However, blood tests taken thereafter showed no traces of alcohol or illegal drugs. Following a thorough investigation by the D.A.’s office, prosecutors opted to dismiss the charges against Hobbs.

Hobbs was terminated from his job with Cherry Creek for violating district rules banning the consumption of alcohol within four hours of a scheduled shift.
