AURORA | The Aurora theater where a gunman killed 12 and wounded more than 50 others in July will reopen in January, the cinema’s owners announced Wednesday.

In a letter to Mayor Steve Hogan, Cinemark, Inc. President and CEO Tim Warner said the theater would reopen Jan. 17 with a special ceremony for local officials and he victims of the July 20 shooting. Werner said Gov. John Hickenlooper is expected to attend.

From Jan. 18 to Jan. 20, the theater will show free movies for the community, Werner said.

Cinemark announced last fall that it would redesign the theater and hoped to open around New Year’s. Plans for the redesigned theater call for turning theater No. 9, where police say gunman James Holmes opened fire, into one of Cinemark’s “extreme digital cinemas,” which feature massive screens that stretch from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

Hogan said in a statement that the community overwhelmingly supported the theater reopening.

“It has been a valued part of our community for many years and I know many welcome it reopening,” Hogan said. “We appreciate Cinemark’s ongoing compassion for the victims and their families, the theater’s employees and Aurora community as we continue to heal. I am looking forward to attending on January 17th.”

  1. FREE? I don’t care if they paid moviegoers, I will NEVER go to that theatre again. Never. No redesign can erase the bad energy there. Would you go, really? What a bad business decision.

  2. You’re a freak. There is a bad memory for many people in a lot of geographic locations. Do you suggest we raze those as well? What do you know about business and whether or not this decision is good or bad? Was it a bad business decision to rebuild at the WTC after “911”?

  3. Im goin my little brother was in theater 8. He will attend and so will i. My little brother said could of happen any where and his home is in aurora no matter how.bad people think aurora is. We cant let one bad incident stop from moving on. Bad things happen.every where should we shut down those places as well?

  4. It should have been torn down. It is a shrine to the shooter. Everyone who I collect from the airport asks “where is THAT theatre”.
