AURORA | Police say four people were shot — one fatally — Thursday afternoon in the vicinity of East Colfax Avenue and Ironton Street in Aurora.

The slain man was identified Friday by Arapahoe County coroner officials as Anthony Ray Denton-Gutierrez, 27.

The three surviving gunshot victims were taken to a nearby hospital and their injuries are considered non-life-threatening, police said in a statement.

Interim Aurora police Chief Heather Morris told reporters Thursday that the slain person was an adult male. The others injured were two men and one woman.

“This is really tragic,” Morris said during a press conference near the shooting location, a parking lot adjacent to 1472 Ironton St.

Morris said an initial investigation reveals that the shooting was not random.

“Preliminary information suggests that there is a connection between the victims and the suspect(s),” police said in a statement later in the evening.

Morris appealed to the public to call police or Crime Stoppers if they have any information or video recording of the shooting.

“Anything,” Morris said.

The shooting occurred at about 3 p.m. in a parking lot behind a building on Colfax, at Ironton Street.

“No suspects have been identified or arrested,” police said. “We are working to gather any suspect descriptions.”

Police said anyone with information can call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, police said.

  1. So, this is news? To Who? For most local citizens we already know East Colfax is a regular shooting gallery. That’s one reason the businesses are boarded up- two blocks away on Havana, Walmart called it quits – said enough is enough to dangerous anymore, so adieus. This crime wave continues to move east right down Colfax. Funny how the city management can’t see it. Maybe some do, but not enough are convinced yet, it’s real and it’s genuine. Nonetheless, these cops see it, they are the ones that are leaking the information out. Whistle-blower.. As-it is. And it’s fascinating at the same time the city works to downplay it with their recent “Fact Check” over the misrepresentation of criminal activity conditions. They pretend last Sunday at Buckingham Square was not that concerning and perhaps even acceptable. This Colfax shooting – it’s not abnormal around here anymore.

    1. I completely agree. The city management, mayor, city council are very much aware of this continuing critical situation. So is the Aurora PD.
Nothing seems to be done to track down and arrest the criminals who seemingly run free to repeat their crimes. Rarely are there cops on the streets. Certainly the lack of traffic cops out to watch for reckless, dangerous drivers, and often vehicle thieves driving without regard for laws, is evident. What is being done about any of this?

  2. Another in a series of feckless Chiefs of Police for APD. Aurora’s obsession with diversity manifests in its choices for important leadership positions. Recall the disaster with DEI hire Vanessa Wilson who was hired because she was a lesbian woman. How did that work? The latest check in the box with the interim Chief is no better as she seems to favor gaslighting over facts. The rank and file cops on the force should not be led by a person chosen to fulfil identity fantasies but should be supported by someone who knows the job and what is needed to do it without the political shackles.

    1. You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. You think only a white male is capable??? Hysterical

  3. I know I shouldn’t be thinking about the past, but I recall the Aurora of my past in the 1960s and 70s. Colfax where we went to the movies at the Fox and bought our new sneakers for school at Gart Bros. We’d get a real Coke at the Woolworth’s luncheonette and our moms would get us our Sunday dress clothes at Penney’s. Instead, all I read about is how Colfax is a den of vipers instead of a vibrant main drag. Damn, where has it all gone?
