COMMERCE CITY | Some Colorado schools will be required to provide breakfast to students after the first bell of the day under a proposal being signed into law.
The proposal requires schools that have 80 percent or more students who qualify for free or reduced lunch to participate in the program. The requirement starts next school year under a bill approved by lawmakers.
Gov. John Hickenlooper is signing the bill Wednesday at a Commerce City elementary school.
Lawmakers say the goal is to make sure students are not hungry when they start school. Schools can choose how to provide the breakfast, whether it’s during a brief recess or in class.
