AURORA | The defense in the Aurora theater shooting trial rested its case Friday after showing jurors videos of Holmes in a jail cell and hospital room a few months after the July 2012 attack.
Prosecutors were expected to call rebuttal witnesses, but District Attorney George Brauchler said they will not do that.
“The people don’t see the need to put on a rebuttal case at this time,” he said.
The videos played Friday show Holmes in a cell at the Arapahoe County Jail and in a hospital bed at Denver Health Medical Center, both in November 2012 when his layers say he was in the midst of a psychotic breakdown.
In the jail video, Holmes can be seen running into a wall and apparently spreading feces around his cell.
The hospital video shows Holmes strapped to a jail bed with police and others coming in and out of the room.
Judge Carlos Samour Jr. is expected to release the jurors later today and have them come back Tuesday for closing arguments, after which they will begin deliberations.
The trial is in its 47th day. If the jury finds Holmes guilty, there could be a lengthy sentencing phase starting later this month.
Holmes is accused of killing 12 and wounding 70 others during the July 20, 2012 rampage at a packed Aurora movie theater. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity; prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
