AURORA | A man with a machine gun and a possible bomb strapped to his waist robbed an Aurora bank Monday afternoon, eluding a SWAT search of the surrounding neighborhood, according to the FBI.

After the robbery, heavily-armed police officers searched a north Aurora neighborhood for almost an hour looking for the man but came up empty.

The robbery occurred about 2:30 p.m. at the Bank of the West near East Colfax Avenue and Havana Street. According to the FBI, the man entered the bank with what the FBI described as a machine gun and demanded money. Witnesses said he also had what appeared to be a bomb strapped to his waist.

The suspect fled the area in a 1996 to 2001 white Ford Expedition or Explorer, the FBI said.

Investigators described the robber as a black male in his 40s, about 6-feet tall and wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

Early on in the search police seemed to have narrowed their hunt to Geneva Street between East 13th Avenue and East 14th Avenue. Five officers on foot and a police dog walked from house to house, searching backyards and under cars. Other officers were stationed at every intersection along 13th Avenue from Florence Street to Havana Street.

At about 4 p.m., after searching more than a dozen yards, officers returned to the bank and police said the search was over.

The FBI said the same man is a suspect in a May 23 bank robbery on Leetsdale Drive in Denver.

Investigators said the man is armed and dangerous and said if the public sees him, they should call police and not approach him.

The FBI is asking anyone with information of the robbery to call the FBI Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force at 303-629-7171. They can also remain anonymous and earn a $2,000 reward by calling Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
