Aurora Police Division Chief Kevin Barnes addresses reporters about an officer-involved shooting May 23, 2024 SENTINEL SCREEN GRAB

AURORA | An unidentified man was shot by an Aurora police SWAT officer late Thursday morning as Aurora and Denver police attempted to arrest the man, who is wanted in connection with a Denver attempted-homicide case, police said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital and is listed in “stable condition” in an intensive care unit, according to Aurora police Division Chief Kevin Barnes.

The shooting occurred just before at Edenbrook condominiums at 384 S. Ironton Street in west-central Aurora.

Police said Denver and Aurora police SWAT units went to the complex earlier in the morning and set up to arrest the man in connection with a May 5 Denver homicide case.

Barnes described the man as “high risk.” He did not identify the man nor detail the Denver homicide.

At one point, police confronted the man to make an arrest.

An Aurora officer fired at the man, striking him, Barnes said.

Officers began immediate medical care until rescuers arrived.

The officer who fired at the suspect is a police department veteran, serving with APD since 2011. He has served eight years on the SWAT unit, Barnes said.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, which is standard police department policy.

Police have begun a shooting investigation, as well as an internal affairs investigation. The 18th Judicial District will be part of a Critical Incident Response Team, providing an independent investigation into the shooting.

  1. Thank you, Aurora and Denver police officers, for getting the homicide suspect into custody.

  2. My question because I can’t see the video is why did the officer shoot was his or someone’s life in danger? It don’t sound like it!

  3. Aurora police are bad and for Denver to contact y’all because that’s procedure and this UNARMED man to be shot and killed by yall is really nuts and speaks volume. Yall want the community to trust in yall but you keep killing US. Now let that sit on your helmet and take space in your thoughts. This is pure ignorance on all law enforcement and there’s no color behind your guns it’s y’all mind set and emotions pulling the trigger.

  4. I think it’s fair to wait and see all of the investigation before rushing to judgement. Officers are in a position no one wants to be in, but offer plenty of criticism. When all the information comes out, then make an informed opinion.
