AURORA | Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Michael Giles Jr. is accused of driving under the influence early Saturday after his roadside arrest southeast of Aurora, according to Arapahoe County Sheriff officials.

Giles, 51, was driving near E-470 and East Quincy Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. Oct. 31 when a deputy reported seeing Giles swerve across lanes and run a red light, sheriff officials said.

The deputy pulled Giles over and conducted a roadside sobriety test, which prompted his arrest.

District officials said they were aware of the arrest, and offered a statement from Giles’ attorney Benjamin Hartford.

Michael Giles, Jr.

“Mr. Giles understands the seriousness of this matter and recognizes the concerns that news of his arrest may raise within the Aurora Public Schools community,” according to a statement credited to Hartford. “He is treating the matter with the seriousness, responsibility, and respect it deserves. Because this is a pending legal matter, neither Mr. Giles nor his counsel will comment at this time on the specific allegations or circumstances surrounding the arrest. Mr. Giles intends to address the matter through the appropriate legal process, and we ask that the process be allowed to proceed before conclusions are drawn.”

Court records show he appeared in county court Monday and is slated to return on Dec. 15.

Giles was appointed APS superintendent in April 2023. Before that, he was an educator rising to top administrative ranks in Cherry Creek schools for more than two decades.

  1. This is inexcusable and calls for immediate dismissal. If Mr Giles cannot conduct himself in a respectful manner in our community he has no place being the leader of one of Colorado’s largest school district. There should most certainly be jail time and an example should be made out of him. Get him out of there, and maybe put in him behind bars so he can fully grasp the gravity of his actions.
