AURORA | Aurora Public Schools has one big summer hurrah before it’s back to the books.
“In one of the most diverse communities in the country, Aurora’s Back to School Kickoff brings dozens of cultures together to celebrate the start of a new school year,” school officials said in a statement from Aurora Public Schools.
The annual event will be held throughout the Town Center at Aurora mall, as a good kind of “takeover.”
Students and families will be able to meet their school’s principal while picking up one of 6,000 free backpacks and grabbing free school supplies. The free backpacks are provided for only Aurora Public Schools students.
The festivities are not only school-related.
The event is a large festival with free food and entertainment, including bounce houses, a climbing wall and dance/cheerleading performances from APS high schools. There will also be interactive basketball and hockey activities with the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche.
As families keep exploring the shopping center grounds, they’ll find the Aurora Public Library Bookmobile, free face painters and even a stilt walker. A resource fair will also feature dozens of community partners.
School will begin Aug. 6 for APS students in grades 1-12, and Aug. 12 for kindergarten and preschool.
