AURORA | Police on Monday continued to investigate a Sunday afternoon head-on crash that left the driver of a Jeep Cherokee seriously injured.
The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when the eastbound Jeep swerved into the westbound lanes of East Iliff Avenue and smashed into a Honda SUV.
Aurora police Lt. Jeff Turner, who oversees the department’s traffic section, said a witness told officers they saw one of the Jeep’s tires wobbling before it swerved, but investigators aren’t sure if that was the cause of the crash.
Police are also looking at whether the driver of the Jeep, who remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, may have been intoxicated. Turner said the results of a blood test showing whether the driver was intoxicated won’t be ready for several weeks.
The two passengers inside the Honda were wearing their seat belts and were not seriously hurt.
The crash closed Iliff near South Peoria Street for about four hours Sunday while police investigated.
