AURORA | The Aurora NAACP slated to host a candidate forum Saturday featuring candidates for statewide offices and the city’s 6th Congressional District.
Officials said all candidates running for statewide office, including governor, attorney general and secretary of state, as well as for the Congressional District 6 seat, have been invited to participate.
The forum is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 13696 E. Iliff Place. The event is open to the public, and nonmembers are encouraged to attend.
The forum’s primary theme will be public safety, officials said in a statement. Aly Belknap, executive director of Common Cause, will facilitate a discussion that also will cover ballot measures and voting basics, NAACP officials said.
The event is the second and final candidate forum of the season hosted by NAACP Aurora. The first, held over Labor Day weekend at the Community College of Aurora, featured candidates for the Colorado Legislature and Arapahoe County offices.
The forum is part of an NAACP get-out-the-vote campaign.
“I am proud of the Aurora community for continuing to show up and support our efforts to educate and increase voter turnout, especially among our youth. Elections matter now more than ever,” NAACP Aurora President Thomas Mayes said in a statement.
Danielle Young-Kombo, chair of the organization’s Political Action Committee, said debate over Colorado’s vote-by-mail system underscores the importance of voter participation.
“It is concerning that Colorado’s vote-by-mail system has been a topic for debate, which proves our democracy is at stake. We need everyone to show up to the polls on November 3rd,” Young-Kombo said.
The Aurora NAACP was founded in 1991 by Barbara Shannon-Banister and is part of the NAACP Colorado-Montana-Wyoming State Conference.

NAACP Aurora, a nonpartisan organization, said it does not endorse candidates for public office.
