AURORA | An Aurora man faces vehicular homicide charges after he ran a red light while speeding, crashing into another car, resulting in that driver’s death, police said in a statement.

Investigators said Cornelius Thomas, 41, was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Tahoe, eastbound on East Jewell Avenue at about 2 a.m. When the crash occurred. Investigators said he was driving  “at a high rate of speed,” and ran a red light on South Peoria Street.

The SUV struck a Chevrolet Cruz, northbound on Peoria, in the intersection.

“The driver and sole occupant of the Cruze, a 28-year-old man, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Aurora police spokesperson Agent Matt Longshore said in a statement. “The driver of the Tahoe, identified as 41-year-old Cornelius Thomas of Aurora, and a female passenger were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.”

Thomas was later arrested and taken to the Aurora Detention Center. Details on his bond were not available.

Thomas faces charges of vehicular homicide, police said.

  1. I am fully in favor of red light cameras! As a driver, I pause to look both ways each time I am driving the lead car, waiting for the light to change. It is surprising that so many hit the gas when the light turns red, rather than stop. Another thing cameras could catch are hit and run drivers. Again, I’m appalled at the number of drivers who don’t feel responsible to stop after causing an accident.

  2. Hang em. I get “blown off the road” all the time by these idiots. Never a cop around either. I always wonder why I encounter SO many of these morons, but there’s never a cop to be found. They think they own the road. A few painful examples of actual punishment will do a lot of good. There is NO acceptable excuse. I mean – really – someone DIED at the scene? How bad does it have to get?

    1. Hang em, you’re just as guilty for a life if you think this way. Accidents does happen people make
Mistakes everyday, I’m sure you have and just haven’t been caught yet. Be careful how you choose your words. We have no right to punish anyone, not even you, take this how you do. Just remember karma can happen.

      1. There is no such thing as karma.
How is Cornelius Thomas, 41, intentionally speeding, an accident?
Thomas killed an innocent young man.

  3. That’s pretty crazy, hang em is insane. It was an accident he didn’t intentionally kill someone. He is someone’s father, son, brother and friend but say how you really feel….

    1. Not an accident when intentionally speeding.
Not an accident when speeding through a RED signal.
Had Cornelius Thomas, 41, not have been speeding, the innocent young driver Thomas killed wouldikely be alive.

  4. I believe that drivers should know not to speed and blow through a traffic light, whether or not it results in striking another vehicle is wrong. Empathy first should be given to the innocent victim who I presume also has a family. We should be thoughtful and balanced when expressing ourselves. Speeding and dangerous driving is a big problem.
