AURORA | An Aurora man has been convicted of sexual assault and could face life in prison after police say he posed as a doctor from an immigration facility to get access to a 9-year-old girl he assaulted.
Kenneth Dean Lee, 57, was convicted Thursday of second-degree kidnapping, second-degree burglary, sex assault on a child, criminal impersonation, criminal invasion of privacy and false imprisonment. Under Colorado law, he could face up 48 years to life in prison, or as little as probation.
According to prosecutors, Lee called the victim’s home repeatedly in 2010 and said he was a doctor from an immigration facility and said he needed to give the 9-year-old girl a checkup. The family are immigrants from Vietnam.
In October 2010, Lee showed up unannounced and uninvited to the victim’s home, identifying himself as the doctor from the immigration facility, and took the nine-year-old child to a private room and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said. The victim ran out of the bedroom screaming for help, and Lee Left.
Prosecutors said Aurora police tracked Lee using phone records and arrested him.
“This is one of the most disturbing cases I have come across. We will aggressively and appropriately seek justice for those immigrants in our community who are preyed upon by those exploiting their trust in this country. The victim should be proud of her courage in facing the six-foot-three-inch man who towered over her and sexually assaulted her by pretending to be an ‘immigration doctor,’” District Attorney George Brauchler said in a statement.
While Brauchler cheered the conviction, he said he was still frustrated by Colorado law that allows a judge to consider probation in this case.
“The only outrage greater than this despicable, predatory behavior is that under our Colorado laws, this sexual assaulter is eligible for probation,” he said.
Lee is set for sentencing Nov. 12.
Prosecutors said Lee has another trial in a separate criminal case later this year.
