AURORA | Aurora City Council members at their winter meeting Feb. 9 will discuss the possibility of opening a mental health and victim assistance center for victims of the July 20 theater shooting at the vacant Hoffman Heights Library.
The “Resiliency Center” is planned for the lower level of the Hoffman Heights library, and it would provide individual and group counseling for victims and families, art and music therapy programs, and physical activity programs, according to city documents.
The City of Aurora would partner with several community organizations to offer services at the center, including Aurora Mental Health and the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center.
If council members agree to move forward with the proposal, the center would open by March 1 for about two years. The estimated ongoing costs for the resiliency center would be about $35,000, which would be funded largely through grants, according to city documents.
According to the city documents, the resiliency center would “create an approachable, community-based place where people feel comfortable connecting with others and services to encourage their healing process.”
