Bergan announced the diagnosis and her plans for treatment in a press release this week.

“While I will be taking some needed time to address my health, I remain dedicated to working on behalf the constituents of Ward VI,” she said.  “Long before I was elected this past November, I was active in Aurora in many ways. I can’t fully anticipate how I will be feeling, and may need to adjust how I carry out my responsibilities, but please know that my heart is committed to serving this community.”

Hodgkin’s lymphoma — formerly known as Hodgkin’s disease — is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. The American Cancer Society said there were about 9,050 new cases of the disease in 2015.

“I believe this important work will give me purpose and help keep me stay strong as I face this personal challenge with my family at my side,” Bergan said of the diagnosis.
