AURORA | After almost 12 years as the county’s top cop, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson is retiring early next year.
Robinson announced the move Thursday morning and said he hoped the board of county commissioners would appoint Undersheriff David Walcher as the new sheriff. Robinson’s last day will be Jan. 31.
Walcher — who Robinson recruited from the Jefferson County sheriff’s office in 2009 in hopes that he would follow Robinson as sheriff — has already launched his 2014 campaign for sheriff. Both Robinson and Walcher are Republicans.
Robinson was elected to a third term in 2010, but said Thursday that he had always planned to retire before the term ended so his successor could have a smooth transition.
After he leaves office, Robinson said he plans to take a couple months to consider what to do next. He said he will leave the door open to return to law enforcment in some capacity, but he will not seek elected office again.
“That’s the one thing I’m not at all interested in,” he said. “I’ve held in my opinion the very best elected office that there is.”

Hey, I have come up with a great solution for everyone.
I think Chief Oates should run. Then, our new chief in Aurora can plug up the Arapahoe County Jail like Oates did.
Oh shoot, what am I thinking? Arapahoe County is only the third largest in the state and isn’t big enough to contain an ego the size of the one Oates is sporting.
Well officers, I can always hope an earthquake will happen right under his feet for you. So far, nobody seems to want to take that stinky albatross off our hands!
