AURORA | For Aurora Public Schools students and families, it’s time to get back at it and hit the books — but not before hitting the mall.
Aurora Public Schools will hold its 18th annual Back to School Kickoff Saturday, bringing students, families and community organizations together ahead for mixing, entertainment and free school supplies to set off the start of the new school year.
The event is scheduled 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mershops in the Town Center at Aurora Mall, 14200 E. Alameda Ave.
School officials say the event is designed to serve one of the nation’s most diverse communities by bringing together dozens of cultures to celebrate the upcoming school year.
Students and families will be able to meet their school principal, and APS students can receive one of 6,000 free backpacks along with free school supplies while supplies last.
A host of activities are slated throughout the shopping center. Outside, families are welcome to free food and entertainment, including bounce houses, an inflatable golf simulator and hip-hop performances by the local School of Breaking.
Additional attractions include the Aurora Public Library Bookmobile, face painting, opportunities to explore an Aurora Fire Rescue fire engine and a resource fair featuring dozens of community partners.
The first day of school for APS students in grades 1 through 12 is Aug. 6. Kindergarten and preschool students begin classes Aug. 10.
