AURORA | Safeway officials have announced they are closing nine grocery stores across the metro area — three in Aurora  and one in Centennial.

Spokeswoman Kris Staaf said Saturday the stores will be closed by June 13.

Safeway officials say they have been evaluating operations at the stores extensively, considering ways to improve performance, for more than a year.

Staaf says the stores that are closing are not profitable.

The Aurora and Centennial stores closing are:

• 16921 E. Quincy Ave, Aurora.

• 22675 E. Aurora Parkway, Aurora.

• 1730 S. Buckley Road, Aurora.

• 8200 S. Quebec, Centennial.

  1. There was a time when most meals were prepared and eaten at home. The basic ingredients were purchased at grocery stores, and most customers approached the checkout lane with a cart full of items. Nowadays many folks eat out and only use grocery stores as a seven eleven. Restaurants and fast food reigns and grocers are on the decline. Most kids in the metro area get free meals at school, so their parents don’t need as many groceries at home.

    1. The Safeway store at 1730 Buckley has sucked for years! Customers have had to wait in long lines because only one check out clerk is available; also many times there is no one working customer service desk. I wanted this store to succeed as I live only 2 blocks away, but all my complaints were ignored!

    3. Joe, you forgot so many of our younger folks, even reaching into mid life do not know how to cook food from scratch anymore. I grew up and went to school in the day when we raised gardens, and canned 1,000 to 1200 quarts of fruits and vegetables each year, raised our own chickens, beef, hogs, and smoked hams and shoulders, ground sausage or ground beef and smoked or canned that. Not much cash, so we only bought flour, sugar and salt. Baked our own bread. Folks now believe milk comes in jugs or paper cartons, bread is sliced, and for many, the food places now will cook meals, and deliver to homes, just like pizza or other foods. Understand very common on east coast, to call or arrange ahead of time, and food prepared and delivered within 15 minutes. No cooking so no dishes to do, just eat, watch or listen to entertainment, and go to bed. And in long run, better. Don’t have to read all that info on store goods about how much fat or other stuff you don’t know about is printed. Times have changed.
