South Korean law targeting ‘fake news’ takes effect as journalists’ groups raise concerns

South Korea has enacted a law that allows for punitive damages of up to five times the proven losses against news outlets and social media influencers for spreading false information, with fines of up to 1 billion won for those who distribute false information more than twice after a court has confirmed it to be false.
