ROCKY FORD, Colo. | Rocky Ford cantaloupes are finally making their way to market after delays due to this year’s wet weather.

The Rocky Fort Growers Association says growers in southern Colorado began picking and packing the first of the melons on Monday.

First, it says spring hail and flooding in April and May forced growers to replant the crop as many as three times. Then wet weather delayed the start of the harvest by about two weeks.

Association president Michael Hirakata says farmers are hoping for dry weather late into September to possibly extend the season at the back end.
