The Aurora Fox Theater added four more awards to its growing collection of accolades July 21, after taking home top honors in four categories at the ninth annual Henry Awards, held by the Colorado Theater Guild.
Each year, the ceremony at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities recognizes theater companies from across the region for outstanding achievements from the prior production season.
“We know, and our audience knows, about the great stuff we’re doing and the high quality of our productions,” said Charlie Packard, the Fox’s executive producer and individual award recipient for Outstanding Scenic Design in Metamorphoses. “It’s nice to know that the Henry judges recognize that as well.”
The judges did more than merely recognize the Fox, tapping them for 14 separate nominations in a variety of categories for its productions of Metamorphoses, Painted Bread and Spamalot, as well as a general nomination for Outstanding Season for a Company.
“This year, [the Henry’s] were particularly great for us,” Packard said. “We put up a really strong season last year, really stretching ourselves beyond our typical boundaries, which made for a really rewarding and remarkable season.”
In addition to Packard, three other individuals were recognized for their work in 2013–2014 Fox productions. Shannon McKinney and Karen Slack each earned top honors for their work in Painted Bread, taking home the hardware for Outstanding Lighting Design and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play, respectively. William Burns joined Packard as a standout for his work in Metamorphoses, nabbing the trophy for Outstanding Sound Design.
The Fox opens its 2014–2015 season with a production of Once On This Island, a Caribbean-themed musical that starts Sept. 12. The theater rounds out its 2014–2015 season with Red Ranger Came Calling, and regional premiers Big Fish – the musical and She Kills Monsters.
