AURORA | Two young boys were seriously hurt in a crash Friday evening at East 17th Place and Interstate 225, Aurora police said.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. when a man driving a red Jeep Cherokee ran a red light and was broadsided by a Ford F-150 pick up truck.

Police said a 2-year-old in the Jeep was thrown from the vehicle and a 5-year-old was trapped inside and had to be pulled from the wreck by firefighters.

The 2-year-old was not properly strapped in a car seat, police said. Both boys were in critical condition at a local hospital Friday.

Aurora police Lt. Mike McClelland said both boys remained hospitalized Monday. The 2-year-old boy was in critical but stable condition, and the 5-year-old is in slightly better condition, McClelland said. Police expect it will take several days before they know the full extent of the younger boy’s injuries, he said.

The driver of the Jeep, Geraldo Estrada, 29, of Denver, was also hospitalized with minor injuries, police said, and the driver of the truck was not seriously hurt.

Police said Estrada admitted to running the red light and told police he was not supposed to be driving because his license was revoked for being a habitual traffic offender.

Estrada has not been charged with a crime, but police said he could face several charges, including careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury, child abuse and driving with a revoked license.
