AURORA | Police are crediting Aurora’s new “real time” cameras and technology for helping them track down and arrest a man accused of fatally striking a pedestrian in a hit-and-run crash in north Aurora Saturday night.
Police were called to East Colfax Avenue and Sable Boulevard at about 9 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian hit by a car.
“An 18-year-old male pedestrian was crossing Colfax northbound against the traffic signal when he was struck by an SUV that fled the scene,” Aurora police spokesperson Gabby Easterwood said in a statement.
The unidentified man struck by the car was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
“With assistance from our Real Time Information Center, investigators were able to obtain the suspect vehicle’s license plate and relevant video footage,” Easterwood said. “Within a few hours, officers located the driver and arrested 71-year-old Talal Maaliki.”
Maaliki was arrested and faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, she said. Additional charges linked to the death may be forthcoming.
Aurora last year opened what it calls its “real time” police center, which combines a network of Flock and other cameras in the city and other technology to aid police in identifying and track down crime suspects.
The identity of the crash victim will be released by coroner officials at a later date..
