Children’s Hospital Colorado moves up to 5th in national rankings

AURORA | Children’s Hospital Colorado improved its national standing Tuesday, after being ranked the country’s fifth-best pediatric care facility in an annual list compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

Nearly 200 hospitals participated in the 2015-16 survey, with each one evaluated in 10 medical specialties. Children’s Colorado ranked in nine of the 10 specialties, and was placed within the top 10 for six of them. The top 12 facilities in the country were placed on an Honor Roll for excelling in at least three of the 10 analyzed specialties.

Children’s Colorado improved one spot in the Honor Roll from last year when the hospital clocked in at No. 6 in the country.

“I am so proud that we continue moving in the direction of our aspirations — to be better than the day before, the minute before,” Jena Hausmann, hospital president and CEO, said in a statement. “Children’s Colorado wants to continuously improve so we may do the best for children in our region and across the country.”

Hausmann took over permanent duties as CEO of Children’s last month. She was previously the hospital’s chief operating officer and had acted as the interim CEO since January.

The rankings were compiled through a mixture of weighted mechanisms, including a questionnaire sent to all 184 participating hospitals, surveys taken over the past three years by pediatric specialists, as well as patient outcomes and care-related resources.

Each hospital was ranked in the specific specialties of cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.

Children’s Colorado ranked in the top ten in the following six areas:

· Diabetes & Endocrinology (No. 4)

· Neonatology (No. 4)

· Gastroenterology & GI Surgery ( tied for No. 6)

· Pulmonology (No. 7)

· Orthopedics (No. 7)

· Cancer (No. 9)
