AURORA |  Aurora police will begin issuing citations with fines as part of the department’s new photo- van speed enforcement pilot program, which uses vehicles equipped with camera and radar equipment to catch speeding drivers and send tickets via mail.

The shift to issuing fines rather than warnings has been planned since the first enforcement vehicles hit the streets about a month ago.

Starting Monday, anyone caught driving 11 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit by one of the vehicles will be mailed a ticket. Police have said officers will follow up in person with drivers caught traveling more than 25 miles per hour over the limit.

The vehicles are clearly marked and are flanked by a warning sign. They are being parked in residential neighborhoods where the speed limit is 35 mph or less, school and work zones, and streets that border a municipal park.

The program is meant to discourage speeding and reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

  1. Get ready for the”my rights…” And “I won’t pay” crowd. Hope they can follow up and the resulting punishment has some teeth.

  2. East Quincy Avenue between Buckley and Reservoir Road is the eastern speedway. With an elementary school, city-owned reservoir and dog park on the south side of Quincy, I wish a photo-radar van would be parked there indefinitely.

  3. Anyone who gets caught under these conditions (clearly marked, greater than 11 MPH over, residential) is too stupid to drive anyway. They need to be taken off the road.

  4. CDOT is now doing similar, targeting drivers who illegally cross the double white line to avoid tolls on the Express Lanes. People think laws don’t apply to them …because why exactly?

  5. Who does the city think they are fooling? They now want us to believe Gov. policy of speed limits shall be the law! Right! It will be a painful reality for this city when this automated ticket machine sends out a picture with a bill and a very small percentage of speeders rush in with a response with a check. APD is now going to get tough in the meantime they clearly show us daily, they will not protect citizens from anything else. To take any enforcement actions serious by this city anymore, look around. It’s absolutely amazing all the talk- yet not much with the walk.
